The Giving Tree: a simple story with fruitful connotations

Indeed a reason to appreciate this masterpiece! It gives the readers a chance to interpret its simple story line in several ways and so far, the story can connote the following: Mother Nature’s care for humankind, a parent’s unconditional love to his or her child, an abusive relationship wherein a pedophile invites an innocent child to play and come along, a person who takes advantage of the love given by his or her partner, and a story between friends wherein a friend tends to provide everything to another friend without expecting anything in return (despite the fact that the other would tend to take advantage of the friendship by only coming due to need). It can also be interpreted as a Biblical representation where Jesus Christ sacrifices himself for the humankind and forgives the humans unconditionally all due to love and care. And since The Giving Tree can be about the environment-human relationship, it can be considered as a wake up call for humans to care for the environment as it never failed to provide them a home.

The quote that emphasizes the central theme of the story

The story ends when the boy, now an old man, realizes the love the tree provided him and regrets what he did as the tree has no longer much to offer but her roots. This serves the readers as a moral lesson that one should realize the love given by their loved ones, which they should not take advantage of but rather should cherish and be given back.

Another reason to appreciate this short story is the emotional vibes it gives to the readers. I cannot help but feel sorry for the tree being used while at the same time, salute her for being brave enough for making sacrifices for the boy, even though she knows that he will not give them back. There are even times when I would get mad at the boy for his ignorance. What makes me have more empathy to the tree is that it bears my favorite fruit which are apples. And finally, I appreciate that the simple short masterpiece is about love, care, and sacrifice.

Definitely a must read for both children, children-at-heart and readers of any age looking for stories with morals and a emotional slice of touch. I may not be that familiar with Shel Silverstein, but reading The Giving Tree makes me look forward to reading more of his written stories.

Genre Children’s Picture Book

The book is about a female apple tree who encounters a boy as he plays with her. The boy starts to exploit her as he grows and despite that, she still loves him with all her heart to the point she would give all her resources (apples, trunk, branches, root) as long as it satisfies the boy’s needs.

Hugot Cafe, Hugot Feels..

Alas! It’s finally here in Las Piñas! I appreciate the conception of the cafe with so much hugot and patama found on walls, glass windows, doors, names of products and dialogues made by staff members while delivering the orders to the customers (which are replies to the named product ordered by the customer). It is not even surprising to see its success since the cafe is founded based on trend. While a series of hugot pick up lines is part of today’s culture, the cafe gives an opportunity for customers to express their inner hugot while munching some snacks, sipping milkshakes and coffee, recharging their batteries and hanging out with buddies.

Bulletin Board where customers post their “hugot” and “patama” lines. Otherwise known as freedom wall.
My Positive pick-up line since positivity is key 🙂

The food quality is nothing different from the other cafes. However, the given hugot names are what makes the food and beverages marketable, although I admit that they are more randomly given than they are actually related to the product content. For instance, I do not see the connection between the Binestfriend fries with cheese and the scenery where a person’s love is rejected by that person’s best friend while having feelings for him or her (in other words, friendzoned). And neither do I see a connection between a Paasa mocha milkshake and a scenery where a person is victimized by false hopes given by his or her date or suitor assuring that they will end with one another.

Not forgetting to mention that the cafe is cozy. It is also accessible (as proven by a decent, sometimes overwhelming due to crowd) as it is located in the main road, even though it appears to be hidden behind a line of restaurants.

Translation: “Don’t push. Pull so that it will come near you.”

Glossary of terms used in the entry (for non Filipino readers and friends)

1. hugot: a word that literally means to draw or pull out. In popular culture, it is often referred to words, quotes, song lyrics, and verses that imply deep emotions (

e.g. “Don’t let anyone ever make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want.”

2. patama: best known as veiled hint, in my blog entry’s context. Also known as solution to problems and getting a winning number like in the lottery (

3.  binestfriend: otherwise known as putting one’s best friend in a friendzone or considering him/her as a friend. The best friend, on the other hand, claims to have special feelings that are close to romantic feelings than friendship.

Xtraordinary Talents, Xceptional People: an Xcellent Dinner Concert Xperience in tribute to Candent’s 10th Anniversary

Thank you for providing us the opportunity to show our existing musical talents and releasing our inner musicians through stage performances. I am personally thankful for the combined well-paid efforts to organize an outstanding dinner concert, and for the artistic and musical efforts I have poured into the souvenir programs and song performances. I am equally glad that I finally have a chance to see and interact with friends I have not seen for long. And since the concert is in commemoration to Candent’s 10 glorious years, I would love to highlight about my overall experience in the place I consider my second home.

I discovered Candent back when I was a teen, when I visited my childhood teachers (who happened to be the center’s main pioneers) while on vacation from abroad. It was not until 2012, few months after I moved back to the Philippines for good, that I became fully involved in Candent, starting from being a junior facilitator in camp to being a now assistant and camp’s volunteer facilitator. I also attended Life Coaching sessions and became one of the vocalists of the student band. From then until now, I cannot help but reminisce the good memories Candent and I shared together. I am happy that it has given me an opportunity to maximize my strengths (talents in arts, music and writing), to improve my weaknesses (dealing with stressful and problematic situations) and low self esteem, to discover a skill that I never thought I had (leadership and advocacy) and to meet friends I consider family.

Thank you Candent for being a beacon of hope to differently-abled individuals like myself and for providing us a community with so much sense of belonging and that gives us a chance to learn different sets of skills that are home, work, community, school, social interaction and leisure related. Wishing you all the success in the future years!

My biggest congratulations once again to Candent for another successful concert! It was indeed a blast.

“Xtraordinary Talents, Xceptional People” Dinner Concert and Awards Night is organized to celebrate Candent’s 10th anniversary. Please visit Candent’s official website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
